Wind Point Lighthouse Case Study

When Joseph and Mary Ann Huser took over as keepers of the historic Wind Point Lighthouse, built in 1880, energy consumption and maintenance costs were closely examined.  Joseph understood the benefits of LED lighting and looked for a lighting solution that would work for this 108-feet tall structure.

The challenge was finding lights that could illuminate the full width and height of the tower. A few possible lighting designs were modeled up, and the 130W OSQ™ flood luminaire with 25° distribution was the solution chosen to light the Wind Point Lighthouse.

The results were a drastic with light reaching the top of the tower and illuminating the ornate detailing that had been in the dark previously. Since this tower is a main attraction and focal point in the town’s history, its visibility is very important.

In addition to the added light, upgrading to these LED lights also was also a big cost and energy saver. The three 130W Cree OSQ flood luminaires replaced three 400W metal halide fixtures, resulting in a 71% energy savings. LED lights also have a much longer lifespan which means less maintenance on lighting and more time can be spent on improving other areas of the lighthouse. Finally, this lighthouse that has provided light for ships for over 135 years is receiving the light it deserves to show its beauty for miles. Check out the full case study on Cree's website.
